Do you want a simple example of a design that works? The following one is not really beautiful but is highly effective.
The goal: to let a student know if he is accepted to Princeton
The context: chances are the student is nervous while opening the letter. It can be difficult for him to read.
The design: no fluff, just a big yes that will free him. A quick scan of the letter is enough to fulfill the goal.
